Stream Bank Stabilization Project scheduled
The first stream bank stabilization project started on April 10th, 2012 and ran though April 14th, with another work session the following weekend. The location of this site is on Klondike Road, near the bridge, just off State Highway BB. There was a workshop associated with this project conducted by David Derrick of the US Army Corps of Engineers. The workshop started at 8 am on April 10th and ran until about 5 pm daily. Engineers were able to earn professional credits for licensing. There were about 50-60 in attendance off and on throughout the week from various government agencies and engineering firms from the private sector.
Innovative Streambank Stabilization Project
Here is the Link to Jefferson County Stormwater slide show, click here for the above project. Click here to see a short video on how this project is stabilizing the creek today. The Partnership with the help of Dave Derrick has done several projects along the Belews Creek. One project, click here, used large stone that was already in the creek to stabilize the bank. Another project stabilized a bank above and below stream of a sewer line crossing click here and included where the creek was eroding the bank and depositing large amounts of loose gravel making a bar. That bar was used to help stabilize the bank going in behind the protective toe and planted with willows and sycamores. Over the course of 4 years we have completed 5 stream bank projects using slightly different techniques on each.
The grant has closed
The grant has closed and all the money was not spent so around $40,000 of it was returned to DNR to be used by other groups for other 319 non-point source projects.
